Assessment

Assessment at Hobbayne

Assessment is an integral part of our teaching and learning cycle. It takes place on a day-to-day basis through talk and questioning, and through discussions with children as learning takes place. During the year we assess children in order to track their progress in reading, writing, spelling, maths, science and the foundation subjects. Through ongoing assessment we are able to identify what the next steps in learning are for individual children.

In Years 2 and 6, children take national standardised assessments tests (SATs). Meetings are held for parents/carers in Years 2 and Year 6 before children take SATs to explain the process and arrangements, and to answer any questions parents/carers may have about the tests.

At the end of Year 1 children are tested on the sounds they can read (phonics). The school supports parents/carers in the Foundation Stage and Key Stage 1 with their understanding of phonics so that they can support their children with acquiring phonic knowledge in English.

Parent consultation days are held for parents/carers each term. This gives teachers and parents/carers the opportunity to discuss each child’s progress and agree ways in which parents can support learning at home. Towards the end of the summer term each child receives a written report.
